Ho Chi Minh City, 17th November 2020 – Today, ManpowerGroup Vietnam partnered with American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) to organize a hybrid virtual event titled “Unleashing New Waves of Women Leaders”. The attendants got to know why organizations should better promote female leaders and identified the obstacles in closing the gender gaps. They also discussed programs to overcome gender bias for better organizational performance.
Today, women make up more than 50% of the global workforce, but less than 25% of women have senior leadership roles. Commenting on this reality, Ms. Uyen Ho, Director, Global Public Affairs, Intel Products Vietnam & Malaysia shared that organizations and companies should know why they need to promote female leaders, what challenges await and how to help women realize their fullest potential as they deserve equal opportunities with men. Ms Linh Thai, Investor, Mentor and Mother, highlighted that it’s now time for leaders to see the obstacles and take proper actions to overcome the gender barriers, which will help improve the organizational performance.
There are even more obstacles now because of COVID-19 pandemic. The latest research “The Future for Workers, by Workers” by ManpowerGroup reveals that women are impacted on a longer term by the economic and social crisis than men. They are more likely to be furloughed, more concerned about going back to the workplace and over-represented in sectors most impacted by COVID-19.
Ms. Carine Rolland, People & Culture Director, Asia Pacific & Middle East, ManpowerGroup said: “Leaders should understand women’s needs to avoid assumptions and prevent unconscious biases while deploying flexible working and policies that help women stay safe and unleash their fullest potential.” She also highlighted that the first step to overcoming these biases is to acknowledge that we have them. Challenging our own assumptions means being aware of our biases and course-correcting for them.
Among the solutions for more women in leadership, leaders should hire more, promote more, and lose less. And instead of saying things like: “she doesn’t have the experience,” we need to ask: “what do we need to make it work?” and only then can we see ways around these cultural stumbling blocks. Last but not least, it’s so critical for male leaders to champion this issue, Ms Carine Rolland added.
